In developing Sift's platform, we encountered a critical challenge in telemetry data visualization: efficiently representing massive datasets within the constraints of standard display resolutions. While downsampling is the fundamental approach, its implementation involves complex trade-offs between data fidelity, computational efficiency, and visual accuracy. The key question became not just how to reduce data volume, but how to do so while preserving critical information and patterns essential for mission-critical applications.

Downsampling large datasets involves reducing the number of data points to make data easier to process and visualize, but it can create problems maintaining the dataset’s key characteristics. Common techniques like simple averaging or random sampling can hide transient spikes or other short-lived, significant events within the data.

With standard observability tools like Grafana or Prometheus, engineers commonly employ percentile-based aggregations to capture outliers that might be obscured by simple averaging. This approach is particularly effective for datasets aggregating numerous data points from distributed systems or high-volume user interactions. However, it has limitations when applied to certain types of telemetry data, especially in real-time or near-real-time scenarios. In these cases, rare but significant anomalies—occurring perhaps only once or twice—might not be adequately represented by percentile-based methods, which typically require a larger sample size to be statistically meaningful. Furthermore, percentile calculations can be computationally expensive for high-cardinality data, potentially introducing latency in real-time monitoring scenarios.

To address these issues, Sift needed to find a downsampling technique that is efficient, accurate, and keeps significant patterns intact, capturing transient events more reliably than simple averaging or random sampling methods.

A Strategic Approach to Data Downsampling

Sift chose to use LTTB (Largest-Triangle-Three-Buckets) downsampling when displaying data on screen. LTTB is a downsampling algorithm created in 2013 by Sveinn Steinarsson, used to reduce the number of data points in a dataset while retaining the overall shape and trends of the original data. This technique is particularly useful for visualizing large datasets because it keeps the key visual characteristics intact while discarding less significant points. Here's how it works in basic steps:

  1. Bucket Division: The time series is divided into n-2 equal-width “buckets” along the time axis, where n is the desired number of output points. The first and last data points are preserved.
  2. Initialize the Result Set: Start the result with the first data point from the original dataset.
  3. Select Representative Points: For each bucket, choose a single point based on which one creates the largest triangle (in area) between the previous bucket’s selected point and an average of the next bucket’s points.
  4. Finish the Result Set: After all the points are chosen for each bucket, add the final point of the original dataset to the end of the result. The process is complete.

LTTB is commonly used for plotting large time series or other high-density datasets where a full-resolution plot would be too slow, or when there are simply not enough pixels on a screen to display it all. It provides an efficient, simple, and visually accurate representation.
